The Maryland State Board of Education will convene on Tuesday, April 29, in the Nancy S. Grasmick State Education Building's Board Room at 9 a.m.
During the meeting, progress reports from the Chronic Absenteeism Task Force will be presented. These will include an update on the development of an Attendance Toolkit aimed at aiding schools in reducing absenteeism. Furthermore, the Task Force on Cell Phone Use in Schools will deliver its final report, featuring recommendations.
The Board will also receive information on the status of federal pandemic recovery funding and initiatives designed to bridge connections between federal public servants and teaching careers, through the "Feds to Eds" program.
This year's newly designated 2025-26 Purple Star Schools will be recognized for providing outstanding support to military-connected students and their families.
In observance of the Month of the Young Child, the Stakeholder Engagement Session will reach out to guests and advocates from the early childhood education sector. This session will address early childhood education initiatives and highlight the progress made under Pillar 1 of the Blueprint for Maryland's Future.
The State Board encourages public participation in its meetings, offering comment opportunities both virtually and in-person. Registration is capped at 15 individuals on a first-come, first-served basis, with 10 slots available in the morning and five in the afternoon. Additional individuals may join a waiting list once the limit is reached.
The deadline for public comment registration is Friday, April 25, at 11:59 p.m. Those interested can register via an online form. Confirmed participants will be notified, and comments will be limited to three minutes per speaker while being monitored by staff.
