The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has announced the designation of Purple Star Schools for the 2025-27 period across eight school systems. This recognition highlights their dedicated support for students from military families.

A total of 23 schools will be acknowledged during the upcoming State Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday. State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Carey M. Wright, expressed the significance of this honor by stating, "Our Purple Star Schools are shining examples of compassion in action. These school communities open their hearts to military-connected students and families, offering not just support, but a true sense of belonging. We celebrate their commitment and the difference they make every single day."

Purple Star Schools named this year include several institutions from Anne Arundel County Public Schools, such as Manor View Elementary and Pershing Hill Elementary; Calvert County Public Schools, featuring schools like Beach Elementary and Calvert High School; Charles County Public Schools' Indian Head Elementary School; Frederick County Public Schools with West Frederick Middle School, among others.

Other recognized schools belong to the Howard County Public School System, Montgomery County Public Schools, Prince George’s County Public Schools, and St. Mary’s County Public Schools.

Maryland engaged in this initiative in 2023, joining 42 other states. Schools earn this designation by having a dedicated military liaison, providing accessible digital resources, running a student-led transition program, and ensuring that staff are trained to meet the unique needs of military families.
