AFT President Randi Weingarten issued a statement to mark President Donald Trump’s 100th day back in office, expressing deep dissatisfaction with his administration's impact on the public.
Weingarten highlighted that, since returning to the White House, Trump has "exceeded the fears of those who voted against him," whilst failing to meet the expectations of his supporters. "Trump promised to lower costs for working people and retirees," Weingarten noted, yet observed that the opposite occurred with problems like slumping Wall Street, declining assets for retirees, and increasing housing costs.
Criticism extended to Trump's handling of public education, with Weingarten accusing him of dismantling education systems and programs crucial for workers and students. The AFT President also took issue with Trump’s proposals to fund tax cuts for billionaires by cutting vital programs, including Medicaid and research grants for health issues. “It’s no wonder his public approval is tanking,” Weingarten stated, pointing to a perceived disregard for the Constitution and rule of law.
In response, Weingarten emphasized that the AFT has filed lawsuits to block changes against public education and other federal programs. “Our members work every day to make a difference in the lives of others—students, patients and communities,” she said, emphasizing their commitment to fighting for better opportunities.
Weingarten concluded with a call to action, invoking the democratic principle that "the people are the ultimate check and balance." She described the efforts of AFT members to advocate for their sector, notably through their participation in large-scale protests like "Protect Our Kids" actions and the "Hands Off" campaign, which addressed various social services and democratic institutions.
The statement underscored the ongoing contention between the AFT and the Trump administration's policies, marking the union’s stance against what they see as detrimental changes under his leadership.
