Dr. Michele Harmala - Deputy Superintendent, Educator Excellence, Career and Technical Education, Special Education, and Administrative Law | Michigan Department of Education
May is Teacher Appreciation Month, and this week marks Teacher Appreciation Week in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and the State Board of Education are highlighting the contributions of teachers through videos of students expressing their gratitude.
State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice emphasized the vital role teachers play in children's lives, stating, "Michigan teachers do so much for children. Teachers help their students learn. They give them support as they grow up. They prepare them for the future and help them realize their dreams." He noted that students are best positioned to express how important teachers are.
The initiative aligns with Goal 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, which aims to recruit and retain quality educators by increasing the number of certified teachers in shortage areas.
Dr. Pamela Pugh, President of the State Board of Education, expressed her admiration for Michigan's educators: "I am always amazed to observe the tremendous positive effect that our hardworking and caring teachers have on Michigan’s children. The State Board and I want to thank our teachers for everything they do for children and families."
To honor teacher dedication, MDE has invited families, parents, guardians, and community members to submit videos showcasing student appreciation for their educators. These videos are available on MDE's YouTube channel and Teacher Appreciation Month webpage, with additional promotion on the MDE Office of Educator Excellence’s Facebook page throughout May.
