Dr. Sherly Chavarria Secretary | Illinois State Board of Education
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is marking Teacher Appreciation Week from May 5 to May 11, 2025, by acknowledging the significant contributions of educators in the state. As part of the celebration, ISBE is sharing video messages and initiating a social media campaign to highlight the efforts of teachers who inspire and empower students.
Governor JB Pritzker and State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders have both expressed their gratitude towards Illinois teachers through recorded messages. Governor Pritzker stated, "This Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to extend my deepest thanks to the extraordinary educators across Illinois." He emphasized that teaching is more than just a profession, describing it as "a calling" filled with purpose and passion.
Dr. Sanders added his appreciation by saying, "Illinois teachers are the heart of our education system." He noted that teachers play a crucial role in shaping lives by introducing students to learning opportunities and being sources of encouragement.
A special event during this week will see Dr. Rachael Mahmood, Illinois’ 2024 Teacher of the Year, honored at a baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs on May 5 at Wrigley Field. Dr. Mahmood will lead fans in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch.
Throughout Teacher Appreciation Week, ISBE's social media channels will feature members of the ISBE 2025 Teacher of the Year Cohort sharing stories about educators who inspired them. The #TeachersInspireTeachers campaign aims to highlight those who have ignited their passion for teaching.
With over 1.9 million students under their guidance daily, Illinois teachers play an essential role in developing future leaders and thinkers. ISBE encourages communities, families, and students to take time this week to acknowledge and thank these influential figures in education.
