During a visit to Uniontown Hospital's newly opened WVU Medicine Children's Birthing Center, Pennsylvania's Department of Human Services Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh emphasized the Shapiro Administration's commitment to improving maternal health services and addressing workforce challenges in rural hospitals. The center restores labor and delivery services to Fayette County.
Dr. Arkoosh highlighted Governor Josh Shapiro's strategic investments outlined in the 2025-26 proposed budget aimed at expanding maternal health care and supporting rural health systems. She stated, "Everyone deserves access to high-quality, supportive, and accessible care before, during and following their birthing experience."
The reopening of the birthing center is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that residents in rural areas have access to necessary healthcare services. "The reopening of Uniontown Hospital's birthing center is a shining example of progress being made in our rural communities," said Secretary Arkoosh.
Carrie Willetts, President and CEO of WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital, along with Dr. Lawrence Glad, Medical Director at the new birthing center, were also present during the visit.
