The Washington State Board of Education has announced that 406 public schools across 154 school districts in Washington are being recognized for their efforts in closing opportunity gaps and promoting student growth and academic achievement during the 2023-24 school year. This recognition is part of the Washington School Recognition Program, which annually highlights schools showing exceptional progress in key areas of student success.

This year, 16% of schools in the state received this honor. The program is open to all state public and charter schools, with each recognized school receiving a banner to display on their premises.

“Achieving this honor is no small feat,” stated Bill Kallappa, chair of the State Board of Education. “It takes a team of dedicated educators and administrators working together to ensure that their students have the knowledge they need to be successful. And it takes great students coming to school every day ready to learn.”

The program is managed collaboratively by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), State Board of Education (SBE), and Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC).

Schools can earn recognition through three different routes, with the possibility of being honored in multiple categories each year. Recognition is based on data from the Washington School Improvement Framework.

Notably, among those recognized this year, 50 schools have been acknowledged for three consecutive years.
