Austin A. Davis 35th Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania | Pennsylvania Department Of Education
Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt addressed Pennsylvania voters today, emphasizing the importance of participating in the upcoming municipal primary election on May 20. He outlined voting options available to registered voters, which include casting ballots at polling stations or returning mail ballots.
During a press conference held at the Capitol, Schmidt stated, "Ensuring our elections are conducted freely and fairly, and that every eligible voter can make their voice heard, are top priorities of the Shapiro Administration." He stressed the significance of voter awareness regarding their rights and options in this election year.
Schmidt also highlighted that due to Pennsylvania's closed primary system, only registered Democrats and Republicans are eligible to vote for their party's nominees. However, all registered voters can participate in voting on constitutional amendment questions, ballot questions, or special elections if they appear on their district's ballot.
He reminded citizens of the continuous nature of elections by saying, "Remember: Every year is an election year. Municipal elections, like the ones happening this year, matter because our local and county elected officials make decisions every day that shape our communities."
