The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Office of State Inspector General (OSIG) have introduced a new security feature aimed at safeguarding public benefits. This feature enables recipients to lock their electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards when not in use, reducing the risk of theft.
EBT cards are utilized for various benefits, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other cash benefits. The new measure is designed to prevent unauthorized access and protect users from losing their essential support.
"When someone's SNAP benefits are stolen from their EBT card, that means they may not be able to feed themselves or their families that month. That is unacceptable," stated DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh. "DHS has been working diligently with our partners in OSIG to ensure that the benefits we administer stay with the Pennsylvanians who need them."
Dr. Arkoosh emphasized the importance of this initiative by announcing, "We are proud to announce this new card lock safety feature that allows you to lock your EBT card when not in use to protect your SNAP and cash benefits from skimming and theft." She encouraged beneficiaries to "download the free, secure ConnectEBT app and take advantage of the easy-to-use locking feature today."
The announcement was made with contributions from several key figures, including DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh, Inspector General Michelle Henry, and Senator Michelle Brooks.
