Shapiro administration showcases art by older Pennsylvanians at state capitol

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, recently hosted a reception to honor older Pennsylvanians who participated in the inaugural Older Artists of PA Showcase. The event featured 30 artworks created by individuals aged 60 and above.

This showcase is part of an ongoing partnership between the Department of Aging and the Council, which began during the creation of "Aging Our Way, PA," a decade-long plan aimed at enhancing aging services infrastructure. Governor Josh Shapiro initiated this plan in 2023 and has proposed a budget for 2025-26 that includes $2 million to improve oversight of the state's 52 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and a $20 million investment to support their efforts.

From over 500 submissions, winning pieces were chosen by panels from each of the five regions across Pennsylvania. These artworks are currently displayed in the State Capitol East Wing Rotunda until May's end, coinciding with Older Americans Month.

"While we celebrate older adults every month, Older Americans Month offers another opportunity to honor older Pennsylvanians for their contributions, for staying active, and engaged as they age. Each of the pieces of art that were submitted showcase the talent and contributions older adults make in our communities," stated Secretary of Aging Jason Kavulich. "We invite everyone who visits the State Capitol to celebrate the creative talents of their friends, neighbors and fellow Pennsylvanians while recognizing the important contributions all older adults make every day."

The speakers at this event included First Lady Lori Shapiro; Susan Cohen, Chairwoman of the PA Council on the Arts; Lackawanna County artist Lenore Fiore-Mills; and Secretary Jason Kavulich.
