The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the National Education Association (NEA), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have launched a campaign named "Put Families First." This initiative aims to oppose federal budget cuts that unions argue will benefit billionaires at the expense of public services. The campaign highlights the potential impact on vital programs like Medicaid and essential community services.
Lee Saunders, President of AFSCME, stated, “Congress’ proposed budget plan will spell disaster for working families and hurt our economy.” He emphasized that these cuts could lead to negative outcomes such as overcrowded hospitals and underfunded schools.
Randi Weingarten, AFT President, criticized the proposed cuts by stating they endanger schools and hospitals while benefitting wealthy individuals. She noted, “Their goal is the gutting of the schools and hospitals that help working Americans have a shot at a better life.”
Becky Pringle, NEA President, highlighted concerns about how education could be affected: “Across the country, educators do everything in their power to support every student... Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their MAGA allies are working to cut Head Start for over 800,000 kids."
April Verrett from SEIU described Medicaid as a crucial support system for many Americans. She warned against cutting this program: “Slashing Medicaid means seniors losing home care and kids missing out on the care they need.”
The unions' campaign includes a $2 million media effort targeting 17 congressional districts. It features personal stories from union members like educators and healthcare workers who would be directly impacted by these budget cuts.
