The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the National Education Association (NEA), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have initiated a campaign named "Put Families First." This initiative aims to oppose proposed federal budget cuts that threaten public services while providing significant tax breaks to wealthy individuals. These unions collectively represent over 8.3 million members, including nurses, educators, and sanitation workers.
According to AFSCME President Lee Saunders, "Congress’ proposed budget plan will spell disaster for working families and hurt our economy." He emphasized that these cuts would affect essential services like Medicaid and food assistance, leading to overcrowded hospitals and underfunded schools.
AFT President Randi Weingarten criticized the proposed cuts by stating, “Our unions represent the people who make a difference in the lives of others—and the public services they provide are in grave danger because of the reckless and chaotic cuts of Elon Musk and the Trump administration.” She highlighted that these actions prioritize tax cuts for billionaires over vital community services.
NEA President Becky Pringle expressed concern about education impacts: “Across the country, educators do everything in their power to support every student... Meanwhile, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their MAGA allies are working to cut Head Start for over 800,000 kids.” She stressed that educators will continue efforts to counteract these budget proposals.
April Verrett, president of SEIU, underscored Medicaid's importance: “Medicaid is a lifeline for working people,” she said. She argued that cutting Medicaid funding equates to taking resources from everyday people to benefit billionaires.
The unions plan a $2 million media campaign targeting 17 key congressional districts. The ads will feature front-line workers whose jobs are at risk due to potential federal funding reductions. The campaign will utilize various platforms such as television and social media to communicate its message.
