Virginia students' reflections on freedom will be preserved in a time capsule as part of the "Expressions of Freedom" competition. This initiative, organized by the VA250 Education Steering Committee, encouraged students from grades 3 to 12 to explore the theme of freedom ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026.

The event is a collaborative effort involving the Governor's Office, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), and Friends of the Washington Statue. First Lady Suzanne Youngkin remarked, “It is inspiring to see students across the Commonwealth reflect on our shared history – giving future generations a window into the hopes and values of this moment in time.”

Eleven winners will be announced on May 20, 2025, with their works displayed at the Virginia State Capitol rotunda. Entries included essays, artwork, videos, and audio recordings responding to "What does Freedom mean to you?" The contest was supported by VDOE and VA250 to foster student engagement with America's semiquincentennial.

Virginia Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera stated, "Witnessing the depth of understanding and creative spirit our students have brought to the concept of freedom is truly powerful." Superintendent Emily Anne Gullickson noted that nearly 100 submissions highlight students' awareness of civic responsibility.

The winning entries will be placed in a time capsule destined for Trafalgar Square's George Washington statue base in London. The capsule will remain sealed for 250 years. Cheryl Wilson, VA250 Executive Director, emphasized that these entries serve as a historical record: "Their winning entries will not only be celebrated today but will also form a historical record for centuries to come."

Friends of Washington Statue worked with First Lady Youngkin on this project celebrating US-UK ties. Soil collected from Mount Vernon will accompany ceremonies in London on June 18.

The Virginia Department of Education emphasizes comprehensive historical education aligned with strategic priorities. It partners with VA250 to promote informed citizenship through extensive studies.

VA250 commemorates America's founding and invites engagement with its history through events like this competition.
