Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, the Shapiro Administration visited Bald Eagle State Park in Centre County to officially launch Pennsylvania's summer outdoor recreation season. The event emphasized the state's ongoing infrastructure investments, its growing tourism economy, and the wide appeal of its state parks and forests.
The initiative is part of the "Pennsylvania: The Great American Getaway" campaign and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR)'s "Still Open. Still Awesome." program. Pennsylvania is inviting both residents and visitors to explore its 124 state parks, 2.2 million acres of forestland, and over 7,000 campsites. These areas offer affordable and accessible outdoor experiences.
"Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and we want people to know: Pennsylvania's public lands are open, awesome, and waiting to welcome you," said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. She added that from scenic hikes to campfires under the stars, there is something for everyone in Pennsylvania's state parks and forests. Governor Shapiro is committed to making strategic investments to ensure these spaces remain enjoyable for all.
Speakers at the event included Bill Kocher, Bald Eagle State Park Manager; Ed Stoddard from Happy Valley Adventure Bureau; Mark Higgins, Centre County Commissioner; Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn; Nathan Reigner, Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation; and Zach Christy from PA Fish & Boat WCO.
