The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has announced the 2025 Green Ribbon Schools honorees, recognizing two schools and one school district for their commitment to environmental impact, wellness, and sustainability. The Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove, John M. Palmer Elementary School in Chicago, and Kildeer Countryside Community Consolidated District 96 in Buffalo Grove were acknowledged for their efforts.
Representatives from these institutions will participate in the Illinois Green Alliance’s virtual event on May 22 to celebrate schools across the state prioritizing sustainability.
State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders remarked, “Illinois’ Green Ribbon Schools honorees are proving that sustainability and education go hand in hand.” He praised the schools for their role as environmental stewards and their contribution to building a greener future.
Miranda Wright from the Illinois Green Alliance highlighted the diverse initiatives undertaken by this year's honorees. She expressed hope that other schools would draw inspiration from these examples.
The Avery Coonley School integrates sustainability into student life through initiatives like AI-powered vertical gardens and partnerships with local preserves for climate research. John M. Palmer Elementary School focuses on sustainability with features such as LEED-certified buildings and community partnerships promoting waste reduction. Kildeer Countryside Community Consolidated District 96 incorporates solar energy use and experiential learning across its seven schools.
ISBE collaborates with the Illinois Green Alliance to select state-level honorees based on reducing environmental impact, improving health and wellness, and providing comprehensive environmental education. Since its inception in 2011, many state honorees have represented Illinois at a national level despite uncertainties about the federal program's future due to administrative changes.
