Jaden Alexander Cody, a 2025 graduate of Howard University School of Law and the 70th Student Bar Association President, addressed the class of 2025 during their commencement ceremony. In his speech, Cody acknowledged the support systems that have helped students reach this milestone. "We are here because of a village behind us," he said, urging graduates to thank their families and loved ones for their contributions.
Cody emphasized the urgency of the current era, drawing parallels with historical periods known for significant social change. He encouraged graduates to consider how future generations will view their actions: "How will people be able to answer where you, where we, where the HUSL class of 2025 stood in history?"
He highlighted the mission of Howard University School of Law as one committed to service, justice, and equity. Cody dismissed notions of magic associated with Black excellence at Howard University, describing it instead as "sacredly regimental." He praised the dedication of professors and alumni who have contributed to maintaining the school's legacy.
As graduates embark on their legal careers, Cody reminded them to carry forward what they learned at Howard: "All that we’ve learned...will be what makes us the best advocate for our clients."
Cody concluded by welcoming his classmates into a new chapter of life while honoring a legacy spanning over 156 years. He invited those present and watching remotely to witness what he described as a historic class poised to make significant contributions in various fields.
The event celebrated not only academic achievement but also prepared graduates for future challenges with an emphasis on leadership and advocacy. The ceremony underscored Howard University's longstanding tradition of producing influential legal professionals.
