Angela Fitterer, Executive Deputy Secretary | Pennsylvania Department Of Education
Governor Josh Shapiro recently visited A. Philip Randolph Career and Technical High School in Philadelphia to discuss the impact of his administration's investments in public education. These investments, totaling over $2 billion since he took office, represent the largest funding increase for K-12 public education in Pennsylvania's history. This has resulted in an annual investment exceeding $11 billion in the state's public schools.
The Shapiro Administration has also implemented a new funding formula aimed at directing resources to schools with the greatest need, ensuring equitable access to quality education across all regions. The effects of these investments are being observed throughout Pennsylvania, including significant improvements within Philadelphia's school district.
During the visit, several speakers addressed the audience, including Monique Braxton, Deputy Chief of Communications for the School District of Philadelphia; Dr. Tony Watlington, Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia; Governor Shapiro himself; Samiyah Golphin, a student; Arthur G. Steinberg, President of AFT Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers; and Dr. Carrie Rowe, Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Governor Shapiro emphasized that continuing this progress is crucial and highlighted his proposed budget for 2025-26 as a means to further build on these educational advancements.
