Kirsten Baesler Superintendent | North Dakota Department of Public Instruction

North Dakota State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler's nomination to become the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education has moved forward to the full United States Senate. The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) approved her nomination in an en bloc vote that advanced seven nominees from President Trump. The vote was divided along party lines, ending with a 12-11 result.

Baesler expressed gratitude following the committee's decision: "I am grateful for the Senate HELP Committee’s vote and honored for the opportunity to support our nation’s students, families, and teachers." She added her commitment to working closely with colleagues if confirmed by the Senate.

Serving as North Dakota's elected State Superintendent since 2013, Baesler was re-elected for a fourth term in 2024. Her tenure has seen advancements in personalized learning approaches, the introduction of teacher and principal apprenticeship programs, a new state assessment system, and an increase in students graduating "Choice Ready" from 21% in 2018 to 71% in 2024.

Upon confirmation by the full Senate, Baesler plans to resign from her current role. Governor Kelly Armstrong will appoint a successor who will serve until the general election in 2026 when voters will decide who completes Baesler's term.
