The National Education Association (NEA) has announced that Dr. Teresa M. Hodge, a mathematics professor at Broward College in Florida, will receive the 2025 Higher Educator of the Year award. This award is sponsored by the NEA Foundation and honors postsecondary education professionals who excel in teaching, student service, and labor-based advocacy.
NEA President Becky Pringle praised Dr. Hodge's contributions: “The best educators understand how their roles are not just about contributing to an excellent education in the classroom, but also to their community—and Dr. Hodge is exactly one of those educators.” She further commended Hodge for fostering an inclusive environment and promoting critical thinking.
Andrew Spar, president of the Florida Education Association, highlighted Hodge's union work: “Teresa stands out as a true unionist and education advocate, and her superpower is her unwavering perseverance.” He noted her leadership during challenging times, particularly when transitioning members to eDues after losing payroll deduction in Florida.
Dr. Hodge's educational background includes degrees from Hampton University and Florida State University. Her teaching style reflects her unique approach to learning: “My style is unique, it’s fun, it’s approachable, and it is loud!” she said. Her methods include active participation and representation of diverse experiences in math materials.
Hodge's involvement with NEA began with her acceptance into the Emerging Leaders Academy in 2010. She has served as chapter president of Broward’s faculty union and currently holds the position of president for United Faculty of Florida.
Adela Ghadimi, executive director of United Faculty of Florida, endorsed Hodge for the award: “What sets Teresa apart is not just her impressive resume, but her unwavering commitment to justice and equity.”
The Higher Educator of the Year recipient is chosen annually by representatives from NEA’s National Council for Higher Education. Dr. Hodge will be honored at the 2025 NEA Representative Assembly in Portland, Oregon.
