Marcus Delgado, Deputy Secretary of Administration | Pennsylvania Department Of Education
Governor Josh Shapiro, alongside Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger, visited the Space Institute at the University of Pittsburgh to emphasize his administration's focus on advancing Pennsylvania's innovation economy. During this visit, Governor Shapiro highlighted a proposed $50 million PA Innovation program included in his 2025-2026 budget. This initiative is designed to enhance life sciences job growth with a one-time $30 million investment and an additional $20 million for annual funding to support large-scale innovation projects.
The proposal aims to create a network among leading universities and research institutions, offering life sciences companies in Pennsylvania the ability to conduct clinical trials more efficiently and cost-effectively. This strategy is intended to give Pennsylvania a competitive edge and establish it as a leader for companies eager to expedite their market discoveries.
"In order to compete, we have to be investing in our future. Pitt Space is a great example of the kind of cutting-edge research and development happening right here in our Commonwealth and my Administration is laser-focused on supporting this kind of work," stated Governor Shapiro. "From our world-class research institutions to our skilled workforce, Pennsylvania has the resources to be an innovation leader and we're doubling down on this commitment with a new, $50 million innovation fund that will support the breakthroughs of tomorrow that will power our economy."
Key speakers at the event included Kevin Washo, Senior Vice Chancellor for External Relations; Megan Shaw, President and CEO of Pittsburgh Life Sciences; Dr. Rory Cooper, University of Pittsburgh Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research for STEM-Health Sciences Collaborations; Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato; Senator Jay Costa; and Representative La'Tasha Mayes.
