The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has announced the Path of the Flood Trail in Cambria County as Pennsylvania's 2025 Trail of the Year. This trail extends for 14 miles and traces the historic path of the devastating 1889 Johnstown Flood. It offers a combination of natural beauty, opportunities for outdoor activities, and historical landmarks such as the Staple Bend Tunnel, recognized as the first railroad tunnel built in the United States.

"Path of the Flood is a special trail that reflects the region's history and provides a vibrant space for recreation and community engagement," stated DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. She added, "I hope this designation brings even more visitors to explore the trail, supporting local businesses and fostering economic, environmental, and social benefits to the region."

The announcement event featured several speakers including Caytlin Lusk and Cliff Kitner from the Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority; President Commissioner Scott Hunt; Commissioner Thomas Chernisky; Mark Kohart from South Fork Historical Society; Steve Coy from Coy/McCombie Link; Brad Clemenson from Conemaugh Valley Conservancy; Deb Winterscheidt from Heritage Johnstown; Deputy Secretary Nathan Houtz of Active and Abandoned Mine Operations; Doug Bosley from National Park Service; Courtney Mahronich Vita from PA Trails Advisory Committee; Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn herself; Senator Wayne Langerholc Jr. representing Pennsylvania Senate District 35; and Tom Kakabar also from Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority.
