Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding highlighted the significance of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for Pennsylvania's agricultural sector during an event at People's Provisions, a Perry County grocery store. The store accepts SNAP benefits and sources all products from local farms. Local business leaders, farmers, and community members expressed concerns about the potential effects of proposed federal cuts to SNAP funding on families, farmers, and grocery businesses in Pennsylvania if Congress proceeds with the current version of H.R. 1.

Governor Josh Shapiro has stated that Pennsylvania is unable to compensate for these financial reductions.

"Radical reductions in SNAP would hurt not only the two million people who receive benefits and may be temporarily struggling, but the Pennsylvania farm families, and families of those in 12,000 grocery industry jobs across the state supported by SNAP spending," said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding. "The Shapiro Administration is doing our part, investing to see that no family goes hungry in Pennsylvania. We are calling on Congress to keep its promises and remember their commitments to Pennsylvania farmers, families, and businesses."

Speakers at the event included Lindsay Hutchinson from People's Provisions, Secretary Redding himself, Jarrah Cernas who co-owns Chicano Sol Farm, and Lindsey Shapiro representing Pasa.
