Tom Horne Superintendent | Arizona Department of Education

Horne has expressed strong disapproval of the Governor's decision to veto a bill aimed at combating antisemitism in educational institutions. He stated, “This is a terrible error in judgment on the part of the Governor. This bipartisan legislation was vital for ensuring that public schools cannot infect students with antisemitic propaganda and her veto is a slap at the Jewish community and those who fight every day against racism."

The bill, known as HB 2867 or the Antisemitism in Education Act, was sponsored by Representative Michael Way. It had successfully passed through the state legislature with support from both parties. Horne emphasized the efforts made by Way, noting, "Representative Michael Way worked tirelessly to shepherd this bill through the legislature, getting support from both parties. This bill should have been signed into law.”

Horne further highlighted concerns about rising antisemitism in the country, particularly among younger generations. He remarked, “Our country has been witnessing a large and steady increase in antisemitism. Studies show that it is much more so among young people than among the older generation." He cited specific incidents within Arizona schools as evidence of antisemitic teachings: "It is not true that there are no instances of teachers in Arizona schools teaching antisemitism."

According to Horne, an incident at Desert Mountain High School involved teachers presenting biased views that allegedly led some students to develop antisemitic sentiments. He also mentioned violent acts against Jewish individuals as part of his argument for stronger legislative measures.

The proposed legislation sought to prevent any form of antisemitic instruction or influence within public schools and higher education institutions by prohibiting certain actions by school staff and affiliates.
