Wanda Maloney Chief Policy Officer | Wyoming Department of Education
The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is seeking public input on the proposed 2025 Wyoming Standards for English Language Arts (ELA), as requested by the State Board of Education (SBE). The feedback gathered will be presented to the SBE.
The proposed standards aim to enhance reading, writing, speaking, and vocabulary skills from early learning through high school. They are organized into four domains:
- Reading: This domain integrates literature and informational text, aiming to develop students' skills across all text types with increasing complexity.
- Writing: It starts with foundational skills such as handwriting and sentence-building in early grades, progressing to advanced writing tasks like arguments and research-based pieces.
- Speaking & Listening: This area promotes respectful conversations about ideas and texts, teaching students clear communication and collaboration.
- Vocabulary Acquisition & Use: Focuses on strengthening word knowledge, crucial for reading comprehension and self-expression.
These updated standards provide a framework for educators to guide students in becoming proficient readers, writers, and communicators while allowing flexibility in teaching methods.
Stakeholders can provide their input through several options:
