Chris Reykdal Superintendent | Washington Office Of Superintendent Of Public Instruction
The U.S. Department of Education has informed state education chiefs that funding for several federal programs may be rescinded, according to a statement from Washington State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. The announcement affects all 50 states and involves funds that were expected to be allocated on July 1st.
The affected programs include Title I, Part C (migrant education), Title II, Part A (professional learning for educators), Title III, Part A (English language learners), and Title IV, Parts A and B (before- and after-school programs). These funds are crucial for many school districts, including those in Washington State, which could lose approximately $137 million or 15.6% of its federal K–12 funding.
Reykdal criticized the potential withdrawal of funds as a "reckless decision by the Trump Administration" and emphasized the financial risk posed to districts that have already planned their budgets based on these allocations. He noted that Congress had approved this funding in March 2025 through a continuing resolution signed into law by President Trump.
Reykdal expressed concern over what he described as a lack of transparency from the Office of Management and Budget and criticized the Department of Education's approach to public education support. He urged state Attorneys General to defend the separation of powers outlined in the U.S. Constitution, suggesting that states must act where Congress has not.
He stated: "It is mind boggling and disastrous to watch members of Congress...put up no legal fight as they get trampled by this negligent and careless Administration." Reykdal concluded by emphasizing the impact on students, educators, and local communities due to what he perceives as Congressional inaction.
