As students across Pennsylvania return to college campuses, state officials are urging them to consider renters' insurance and take advantage of available resources. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), along with the Departments of Education (PDE) and Human Services (DHS), addressed students at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology about these issues.

"Heading back to school is an exciting time, but many students are unaware of the financial risks of fire, theft, or other unexpected losses that occur in dorms, apartments, or even while commuting," said Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys. "Whether you're in a dorm, renting an apartment, or living at home while commuting, you should assess your insurance needs to ensure that your belongings are covered if the unexpected happens. I want Pennsylvania students to know that renters' insurance is an affordable way to protect personal belongings such as laptops, textbooks, furniture, and clothing."

According to officials, students who live in campus housing may be protected under their parents' homeowners insurance policy. However, they advise families to check with their insurance agent for details about what is covered. For those living off-campus in private housing, purchasing renters' insurance is recommended. Renters' insurance policies typically cost between $15 and $20 per month. Some insurers offer discounts when bundling renters’ coverage with other types of policies like auto insurance.

Speakers at the event included Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology President Pedro Rivera; Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys; PDE Deputy Secretary Dr. Lynette Kuhn; DHS Deputy Secretary Hoa Pham; and Rep Nikki Rivera.
