Dr. Carrie Rowe, Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education | Pennsylvania Department Of Education
Governor Josh Shapiro and Dr. Carrie Rowe, Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), will meet with local lawmakers and educators to discuss efforts aimed at improving digital literacy among students in Pennsylvania. The event is scheduled for September 30, 2025, at Middletown Area High School.
The initiative comes as concerns grow over increased violent rhetoric online. Governor Shapiro is emphasizing the importance of equipping students with skills to identify credible information and safely navigate digital spaces.
After his 2024 budget address, Governor Shapiro announced the introduction of PDE's digital literacy toolkit. This resource is designed to help Pennsylvanians recognize biases, distinguish between trustworthy information and misinformation, and use online platforms responsibly.
Participants in the event include Dr. Chelton Hunter, Superintendent of Middletown Area High School; Joshua Rytel, a teacher at the school; Sana Vereen, a student; and Senator Patty Kim from Pennsylvania's 15th Senatorial District.
The event will be live-streamed on pacast.com/live/gov and governor.pa.gov/live/. Members of the press interested in attending are required to RSVP with their details and check in upon arrival at the school's main entrance.
