The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), together with the Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, announced a statewide expansion of truck parking options for commercial drivers. By the end of 2026, an additional 1,202 truck parking spaces will be added at 133 locations across the state. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is also evaluating ways to create more than 600 further spaces on its system.
This initiative marks the first time in decades that designated truck parking spaces have been expanded statewide outside of major facility construction projects. The new spots are intended to help commercial drivers comply with federal hours-of-service rest requirements and address a longstanding issue in the trucking industry regarding safe and accessible parking.
"Truck parking is a nationwide issue, and with the high volume of freight traffic coming through Pennsylvania, the Shapiro Administration knew that we needed to tackle this problem," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. "As a commercial driver's license-holder myself, I know how important this commonsense approach is to our economy and workforce. By adding these spots - and looking at ways to add even more - we're giving truckers many more options to safely park and meet their rest requirements."
The planned parking spots will be located on Interstate on-ramps where there are no safety or visibility concerns, at weigh stations used by police for motor carrier enforcement, and in other areas within highway rights of way. PennDOT and state police staff worked together to select sites that could be designated quickly and cost-effectively. All new locations will feature signage installed by PennDOT indicating their use for truck parking.
This effort aims to improve driver safety while supporting freight movement throughout Pennsylvania.
