Anastasios Kamoutsas, Commissioner at Florida Department Of Education | Florida Department Of Education
Yesterday, Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas and the Florida Department of Education recognized Governor Ron DeSantis for his continued focus on education in Florida. The Governor’s proposed Floridians First budget for Fiscal Year 2026–2027 includes an additional $200 million for teacher and instructional personnel salaries or other compensation costs, raising total funding to $1.56 billion. This marks the seventh consecutive year of increased teacher pay in the state.
The recommended budget also increases per-student funding to $9,406, which is $279 more per student compared to the previous year. Additionally, there is a proposal to allocate $300 million—an increase of $10 million—for the Safe Schools Allocation to further support campus safety and security across Florida.
“When I became Commissioner, I set two main goals: student achievement and school safety. I am proud to say the Governor’s recommended budget prioritizes both of these goals,” said Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas. “I thank Governor DeSantis for his sustained efforts to ensure Florida remains the nation’s top state for education.”
The proposed budget aims to build on progress made by students in Florida and reaffirms a commitment to providing all students with access to educational pathways that meet their needs.
The Florida Department of Education serves about 2.8 million students across 4,471 public schools and 28 colleges at 175 locations throughout the state. As part of Florida's government structure, it oversees public education and related programs statewide, including workforce training, apprenticeships, and support services for individuals with disabilities.
The department's mission is to enhance student proficiency through an integrated system offering valued learning opportunities for students, parents, and communities. Its initiatives are designed not only to improve academic achievement but also foster economic self-sufficiency among residents.
