Texas schools will likely take a blow to their funding as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the state's finances, KXAN reports.
Texas experienced a 9.3% year-over-year drop in the state's sales tax revenue for April, according to KXAN. The loss in this revenue will impact education budgets at both a state and local level.
"The size of the wave is still a little hard to know because it’s still pretty far out to sea, but it’s entirely possible that we have a tsunami headed toward us," Monty Exter, senior lobbyist for the Association of Texas Professional Educators, told KXAN.
Districts across the state are preparing for the impact, with some hoping their rainy day funds will help the loss in revenue, KXAN reports.
Texas State Teachers Association President Noel Candelaria told KXAN he believes Congress should include $170 million in public education support in the next coronavirus pandemic relief bill. Candelaria told KXAN he thinks it would be a mistake not to include public education funding in a federal relief package.
