The Texas transportation directors are generating a plan for safe busing of students when in-person classes resume, according to Social Transportation News.

The Texas Education Agency is planning to follow the CDC’s guidelines for the usage of school buses when students come back to school this summer.

Among the recommendations from the CDC are that a smaller number of students ride at a time, hand sanitizers be placed by the entrance of the bus and students be seated six feet or more apart from one another.

Nathan Graf, general manager of transportation for the San Antonio ISD told Social Transportation News his district will leave the first two seats directly behind the driver empty, to give the driver space to stay safe as well.

One challenge of smaller busloads will be that there will be more trips required to do the same job.

“The good thing is, the drivers would be getting more hours, but we wouldn’t need twice the number of drivers,” Graf told Social Transportation News. “We would be able to do that with our current staff and buses.”
