The U.S. Department of Agriculture is allowing Texas to offer students suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic $285 in credit for food purchases, Community Impact Newspaper reported.
The funding would work similarly to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which is used like a debit card, Community Impact Newspaper reported. The funds will be helpful for families whose children have suffered a loss of food from school closures.
Students must be five to 18 years of age in order to qualify for the funding and must have received SNAP benefits in March 2020. Individuals up to 21 years old, who received reduced or free meals at school in Texas from 2019-2020’s school year, are also eligible for the funding.
School districts will be sending families links to apply for funding this month, Community Impact Newspaper reported. Once an application is approved, families will be sent a Texas P-EBT card in the mail. Benefits for eligible children in a family will be on the same card.
Funding must be used up in a year or they will be rendered useless upon expiration.
