As leaders in academic environments, the COVID-19 pandemic presents challenges that are both common and unique.

In an effort to help administrators handle all of those challenges, the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA) recently released a set of suggestions for three ways that leaders can support their team of staff and educators.

The most important – and most forgotten – tool in any leader’s toolbox is listening. And not just gathering information, but actually seeking to understand what is going on in all aspects and at all levels within an organization from the perspective of those who are dealing with it.

“Don’t just say you have an open door policy – prove it,” TEPSA recommends.

Leaders also need to offer real encouragement to their teams, according to the post. But, it can’t just be blanket encouragement in the style of a motivational poster. For encouragement to matter, leaders have to incorporate that last step of listening, and offer targeted, meaningful encouragement.

And finally, TEPSA advises leaders to not shy away from their own vulnerabilities.

“Let them know how you’re feeling and ways you’re working on maintaining your own sanity,” TEPSA encourages. “Vulnerability shows you are seeking to connect.”
