According to EdNC, Finland serves as an example where teachers enjoy significant autonomy. Finnish educators have the freedom to select their teaching methods, materials, and textbooks without the imposition of standardized tests during basic education (grades 1–9). Teachers independently assess students’ progress, supported by rigorous training programs. This approach is credited with enhancing job satisfaction and reducing stress levels among Finnish teachers.
The RAND Corporation's 2023 State of the American Teacher survey indicates that 65% of U.S. teachers have opted to limit discussions on political and social issues in class due to uncertainties about support from school or district leaders. This reflects concerns regarding autonomy in classroom discussions.
The Nation's Report Card reported a decline in average scores for 9-year-old students in 2022, with a decrease of 5 points in reading and 7 points in mathematics compared to 2020. This marks the largest average score decline in reading since 1990 and the first-ever decline in mathematics scores, suggesting potential challenges within the current educational system.
