The Iowa Department of Education has received nearly $500,000 in federal AmeriCorps funding through the Volunteer Iowa Commission. The grant will support and expand the state's ‘Course to College’ program, which aims to help high school and college students with access to and success in postsecondary education. The program has been active since 2017.
According to the department, more than 80 AmeriCorps members will serve as student leaders and postsecondary success coaches throughout communities in Iowa. High school counselors will also participate as summer transition associates during the summer months.
“Iowa’s AmeriCorps student leaders support their classmates, while summer transition associates ensure student needs are met year-round. Through Iowa’s innovative texting initiative, AmeriCorps postsecondary success coaches support Iowa learners anytime, anywhere,” said Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow. “This investment in our collective work to support students preparing for and pursuing multiple pathways will advance postsecondary readiness and success across Iowa.”
AmeriCorps is a national agency focused on service and volunteerism. Under this grant, selected high school seniors act as AmeriCorps student leaders who assist their peers with postsecondary planning. College students and recent graduates can become college coaches, providing both in-person and virtual help with college applications and financial aid.
“Being awarded this grant affirms the strong impact these programs have had in guiding Iowans toward the many postsecondary opportunities available to them,” said Bureau of Iowa College Aid Chief David Ford. “We’re excited to keep working in partnership with schools and communities across Iowa to support students’ every step in the postsecondary education process.”
Participants receive training throughout the year and organize events such as Application Day, FAFSA completion events, and Decision Day celebrations that highlight various paths after high school including military service, apprenticeships, certificate programs, or enrollment at two- or four-year colleges.
School counselors serving as summer transition associates focus on helping students complete financial aid forms like FAFSA and making sure those accepted into colleges or other programs complete necessary steps for enrollment.
