Friendswood Independent School District issued the following announcement.
The Friendswood ISD School Board of Trustees voted to keep the name C.W. Cline Elementary for the new 900-student elementary school that will replace the current Cline building during the Board meeting on Monday, Dec. 14.
The school originally got its name from Conrad “Connie” Wanton Cline who was a resident of Friendswood from the time he was 12 years old. He was a part of the Friendswood High School graduating class of 1945 where he was elected Class President, Band President, and co-captain of the football team. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Friends University in Kansas.
Cline generously served on the FISD School Board of Trustees for two decades, including the 10 years he served as Board President.
When it came time for Friendswood ISD to expand and build another school building in 1977, the School Board made the decision to name the kindergarten and first-grade campus after fellow Board member, C.W. Cline, who had been absent from the meeting due to illness. Then-Board President George Roy stated he did not believe there was anyone more deserving of the honor.
Cline passed away the following year on September 2, 1978, but his legacy lives on within the walls of C.W. Cline Elementary School, and that legacy will continue to the new campus.
“Cline was always an innovative campus,” Board President Tony Hopkins said. “I believe we will have another 50 years of innovation. There is not another option other than to name it CW Cline Elementary.”
He continued.
“We have three generations of Clines in FISD. Thank you [to the family] for the legacy your family has provided for FISD. We will retain the heritage and the history of Cline when we open the doors.”
