This year, STAAR testing won't be used for the A-F rankings, the Texas Education Agency said, but Texas American Federation of Teachers (AFT) remains concerned on whether or not the tests will be administered as all.
"While Texas AFT is pleased the STAAR test won’t be used for A-F rankings, we remain concerned that the tests will be administered at all," Texas AFT wrote in its press release.
The Texas Education Agency said STAAR testing should be used to show the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on students' education. But the Texas AFT showed their disagreement with this reasoning.
"We disagree with TEA’s reasoning that STAAR testing should proceed so that parents and educators can 'gauge the impact of the pandemic on education,'" Texas AFT wrote in its press release. "Educators and students have lost enough instructional time over the course of this pandemic, why waste more of it prepping for a test that was never designed as a diagnostic tool? In the coming months, Texas AFT will continue to fight the stranglehold high-stakes testing has on our public schools, students, teachers and school districts."
