Clifton Taulbert has shared reflections on his upbringing in the Mississippi Delta as part of "The Legacy Series" presented by Character.org. In his piece, Taulbert recalls his childhood and the influence of family, stating, “It’s my honor to have this opportunity to share my thoughts and my writing with educators, parents, and friends throughout our country and beyond our borders. Having grown up on the Mississippi Delta in the agrarian world of cotton, I thought this would be the only world I would ever know. I had no idea that a writer lived inside of me and that China was closer than I thought. To keep me, a growing young boy, from trouble while sitting on the Turn Roads, my aunt would give me a large stick with a somewhat sharp edge. Mama Ponk would tell me to dig my way to China.”
Character.org was established in 1993 with the goal of encouraging people to demonstrate core values in their daily lives. The organization is recognized for its 11 Principles Framework for Schools: A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character, which has been used by over 1,200 schools acknowledged as National Schools of Character over the past two decades.
